Chapter One
Try-Outs IIt was August of 1954 when the perfect season started. No one knew how tumultuous a season it would be, or how it would change the lives of so many. The morning sun was low in the sky, already beginning to steam the green fields of the countryside. Harry Quester ssat in the front passenger seat of the gray, 1947 Dodge as it rattled northward on Route 17 away from Portsmouth, Virginia and toward the village of Churchland.
"Thanks for picking us up, Bubba," said Harry.
"Sure ... you guys got a treat waiting for you at try-outs," said Bubba with a chortle.
"What do you mean?" asked Harry guardedly.
"You'll meet the Hoods and the Farm Boys," chuckled Bubba. "They like to beat up on the Squares!"
Harry was a tall, compactly built junior in High School of sixteen with very blue eyes, a straight nose and a brown crew cut. Bubba Hawkins, Harry's cousin, was driving. Bubba had luxurious, curlt brown hair, turned almost blond by the summer sun. He was bigger than Harry, slightly taller and much heavier. He had a round face and a happy-go-lucky air that made him instantly likable. Bubba was a sophomore, on year behind Harry. Tony Zee sat in the back seat. He was a sophomore like Bubba.
"Who's the Squares?" asked Tony, wide eyes.
"That's what the Hoods call us ... anyone that ain't cool, ya know!" exclaimed Bubba with a smile.
"How do they know who's cool?"
"The Hoods think they're cook guys," said Bubba "and no one else is ... according to them! "
Tony was the son of Harry's father's best friend. He was as tall as Harry, rawboned and lanky with dark curly hair. He had a thin face and boundless energy dancing in his brown eyes. Harry and Tony had grown up together, almost as brothers, as their fathers had moved about the country in their naval careers.
"Why is this Coach ... Shotgun ... so tough?" asked Tony warily.
"Don' sweat it ... you'll see!" excalimed Bubba taking a bump in the road that rattled everything in the car.
