Author's Statement & Excerpts

The Secret of Wheeler Point is the first rock climbing mystery published for young readers and one of but a handful of novels dealing with the sport.  As such, great care was taken to present the climbing chapters so as to authentically portray the safety concerns and dangers of the climbing experience.

The main characters (two teen brothers) have completed a course of safety training and prepare themselves carefully for each climb they undertake.  The dangers they encounter on the cliff face are consequences of that environment.

“…Ken began to climb, pelted all the while by stinging darts of ice.  Each grip felt cold and wet.  He knew he might slip at any moment.  His feet shook uncontrollably even when he stood on them.  All the while the lightning and thunder sent waves of fear rushing through his body.

“Dale-I’m going to fall!!” he screamed as his hand slipped off an icy block.  He felt himself spin out and slide down the cliff.  A lightning flash lit the surf below rushing up toward him.  Then the rope jerked him to a stop…”

The unique qualities of the sport have been portrayed when they fit into the story.  One chapter takes place in a climbing gym.  Since many women climb, an expert black woman climber is seen in action and the teen girlfriends of the main characters decide during the story that they also want to climb.

“Are you sure?” Ken asked as they turned back to their girlfriends.

“Look, Miss Brown said climbing may be the only sport where women can be as good as men,” Michelle said firmly.  “So we want to try it.”

“You’ll have to cut your nails,” Dale said.

          “No problem,” Ginny replied.

“It’s a little sweaty in the gym,” Ken added.

“We know what you smell like after a wrestling match,” Michelle replied, and both girls laughed.

“Besides,” Ginny began in a demanding tone, “I’ve heard a lot of college kids hang out at the climbing gym; a more mature crowd would be good.”

“You mean more mature guys,” Dale suggested…

Neither of these excerpts deal with the mystery which begins in Chapter One and evolves during the story.  The same resourcefulness and teamwork the teens display during their rock climbs reappear several times.  A surprise ending involves the poise and skills they have learned enroute.
