Summary
The author experienced a curious dream about a stray cat with the odd name, Geraldine Goodkitty, and her three kittens. She decided to write about each of the characters in the dream in order to probe its meaning. Geraldine’s story began to expand and the author continued to write. The story grew into a composite inspired by the cats that have touched her life and the lives of those close to her. Geraldine Goodkitty is told primarily from a feline perspective. However, the animal and human stories interweave at various points and finally converge. The author hopes to sensitize people to the plight of animals that are abandoned and encourage them to search deep into their own hearts for the answers to our human dilemmas. The Prologue introduces a woman, her neighbor, their dispute, and the focus of their disagreement--Geraldine Goodkitty - a stray cat who seeks refuge in the woman’s backyard. The first section, “Urban Stray” contrasts Geraldine’s present hardships with her past circumstances, reveals her total commitment to her kittens, acquaints the reader with feline lifestyles, including Companions, Street Dwellers, and Tree Climbers, and introduces Geraldine’s old and new friends. “The Circle” opens with a vignette of each cat attending the Circle, a nocturnal feline gathering that provides a backdrop for the characters to discuss several topics - including humans - from their perspective. The felines attending are Romeo, the love of Geraldine’s life, Backstretch, a mystical feline and a Tree Climber, Fat Face, Dog Chaser, and Rat Eater who are Street Dwellers, and Tosey, Honey Bee, Meow Baby, Butterfly, Harmony, and Traveler who are Companions. The final section, “The High Ground,” offers the ultimate solution to the dilemma facing the woman, her neighbor, and Geraldine. They discover the capacity to love can change lives and create miracles.
