Summary
A powerful novel of life which has existed for an extended period of social turmoil in America, dating back the era of the great depression. Diversified characters set out the reality of the period in which they live, as a single parent father struggles for survival of his family and attempts to raise and educate his son in a multi-ethnic, northern community. Prejudices of the time influence their lives as well as the lives, loves and pursuit of happiness of other characters. History, which incudes politics of the time and candidly portrayed experiences of true to life characters unleashes shocking truths from a closet which has been sealed for too long. Hate, violence and adversity are at a constant balance with love, gayety and humor as the story develops. Although poverty is a constant obstacle, living is rich and colorful. Neighbors are supportive and coexist. A series of women play important roles in the life of the father, Jess Barker, Lila, his beloved late wife; Carrie, the opportunist; Lovie, with her dreams and efforts to become a famous movie star; and Gail, the realist, caught in a role of deception. Neighbors interact during many crises to strengthen their neighborhood bond. Jess' son, Johnny and his childhood friends; Larry and his pretty, vivacious little sister, Dottie and beautiful Mary Ann grow up with deep ties of love and loyalty which later approach diaster in the face of existing reality. Although religion is a salient factor, a destructive bitterness thrives. Jess' ambition for his son, Johnnie's reactions, love and tragedy bring this novel to a historic conclusion.
About the Author
Evelyn Allen Johnson was born in Pittsburgh, PA and educated in the suburb of Penn Hills. Nursing and writing are among her greatest loves. She is a Registered Nurse, Cum Laude. Afer her graduation from Freedmens' Hospital School of Nursing, replaced by Howard University School of Nursing she later attended California State University at Los Angeles, where she obtained a B.S.N. and P.H.N. She has vast nursing experience including Public School Nursing, and Nursing Administration. She is an award winning author, having received the Vassie D. Wright Award for her novel, "My Neighbor's Island". Mrs. Johnson has also written numerous other works including. "Get The Show On The Road" and a book of poetry, "A Nurse's Notes". She currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband, an attorney and former Tuskegee Airman. They are the parents of three adult children. Raymond, Jr. an attorney; Marjorie Johnson Warren, a physician and Robert, a dentist.
