Summary

A Perfect Season is the fictional story of a High School Football Team that seeks and finds excellence amid the turmoil of growing up, led by a dynamic and controversial Coach with a questionable past. It is based on the 1954-1955 Season of the Churchland High School Truckers, located in the suburbs of Portsmouth, Virginia. During that season, the Truckers were unbeaten, untied and unscored upon, a feat seldom if ever repeated.

Live the experiences of Harry Quester as he endures the toughest of all try-outs and the most grueling summer practices. Feel his emotions as he endures "New Guy" rejection and cruel high school pranks. Share his disappointment when he doesn't make the first team. Go through the conflict Harry has with the tough Coach they call "Shotgun". Meet Allman Buddinger, the "Ball Fox" and find out how he and Harry become best buddies. Find out how Harry gets "playing time" and becomes a key member of the team! Discover how Harry earns the nickname "Headhunter". Find out what makes "Shotgun" so tough and whether he really cares for his players... or is he just obsessed with winning at whatever the cost. Find out how Shotgun's best friend, Slate Phelps, helps to get him out of a jam that threatens completion of The Perfect Season.

Follow Harry as he meets the "girl with the brown pony tail" who captures his heart. Find out why Harry is challenged to fight the leader of the "Hoods"... and what happens!

As the weeks pass, the Truckers are not scored on, and the pressure mounts to stay that way. Shotgun is accused of excessive violence in  his training methods by an anonymous source and must face a hearing that could cost him his job... right at the time of the big Suffolk game. What happens? Can the Truckers win without Shotgun? What is it about Shotgun that makes them win?

The Truckers meet their arch rivals, the Suffolk Red Raiders and their star halfback who aims to take Harry's girl away from him, coached by Shotgun's old enemy "Fatso" Hathaway.

At the end of the season the Truckers meet their downtown rivals, the Woodrow Wilson Presidents. Can Harry best Wilson's star end, Linwood Honor, a boy who used to always outplay him in sandlot football when they were growing up? Can the Truckers win against their larger rival... and stay unscored upon?

This is a terrific book with fast, descriptive football action and characters you'll never forget!
