Summary

This book emerged from a need to more widely disseminate the findings of some important research on “what CEOs wished they knew” before they got the job. The research project was sponsored by CEO William R. Johnson of the H.J. Heinz Company, in support of his own CEO succession planning and development efforts. The work was made possible by the participation and remarkable candor of Bill and 26 other sitting CEOs of global companies. The research was conducted by Drs. Leslie W. Braksick and James S. Hillgren of CLG during 2008-2009. The purpose of the research, and of this book, is to provide unvarnished advice - based on the real experience of sitting CEOs - for the advancement of preparing future CEOs, executives and leaders. Often, the participants' experiences were unflattering for themselves or their companies, and yet they shared openly and honestly with the assurance of confidentiality at an individual level. With the bar set high for CEOs whom were invited to participate in the study (minimum of $6B in revenue; running a global company), it matters not who said what, but rather that an impressive collection of CEO peers offered these important insights for future peer CEOs. After the study's lengthy formal report was shared with the participating CEOs and companies, others quickly heard about the study and wanted to learn from its findings. It became clear that more copies of the study were needed and that a handy book-format presentation of the study's findings would be tremendously valuable. Thus, with the agreement of the participating CEOs, we have released the report in book format now more leaders at all levels - and aspiring CEOs - can learn from some of the most successful CEOs of our time. The first three parts of the full report appear in their entirety in this book, with no change in content. The fourth part from the full report presents detailed profiles of the participating companies, CEOs, and their career progressions. For this book, this portion is greatly condensed. This book offers hundreds of valuable quotations from the participating CEOs. However, quotes are intentionally not attributed to specific individuals.
