Summary
BE THE HERO is not just the title of our book; it's also a call to action to You and to the Hero who lives inside you - the hero you've been waiting for. From the first Challenge Day program in 1987, to our vision for the Be The Change Movement, we've dedicated our lives to creating a world where every child feels safe, loved and celebrated. In our book, we share a lifetime of the lessons we've learned, the stories we've experienced, and the opportunities we've had in finding the Hero in each of us.
We believe:
- People thrive when they feel safe, loved and celebrated.
- If we settle for tolerance, we've failed.
- Separation and despair can be transformed into hope and inspiration.
- Schools and communities can reverse the cycle of bullying and violence.
You'll learn:
- The life-enhancing Formula for Change.
- Ways to build intimacy and connection.
- How to become a better listener and communicator.
- Healthy ways of releasing pent-up emotions.
- Tools for ending oppression, rumors and self-limiting beliefs.
- Much, much more!
About the Authors
Motivated by the memories of their own teen experiences and fueled by a desire to work for positive change in the world, Yvonne and Rich Dutra-St. John, MA MFT, created the award-winning Challenge Day Program in 1987. They designed the program to build connection and forgiveness between youth, and to inspire teens to become positive forces for change in their schools and communities. Rich and Yvonne recognized that oppression, bullying and other forms of violence are actually symptoms of a greater social problem: separation, isolation and loneliness. Today, Challenge Day programs have touched the lives of over a million people around the world. Their work has been featured in the Emmy Award-winning Teen Files: Surviving High School documentary, the Canadian documentary, The Bully Solution, and on the Oprah Winfrey Show's High School Challenge, which aired in November 2005; a show on which Oprah declared, "This is how we change the world."
