Summary
Stepping Out invites the casual walker to put on a light pack, lace up a pair of hiking boots, and set off on a journey through the countryside. Brimming with useful advice and helpful hints, packed with engaging stories and anecdotes, it uncovers the delights and pleasures of traveling on one's own two feet.
With a comfort-loving author as your guide, you'll discover the “how to,” the “what it's like,” and the “why you'll love it” aspects of long-distance walking in Great Britain and beyond. Rambling by day and resting in cozy lodgings each night, you'll trek up hill and down dale, visit pubs and historic sites, follow waymarks, and stay (almost) dry on rainy days.
With wit and wisdom, this candid, lighthearted guide speaks to everyone who has ever been tempted to walk a little further, for a little longer, on an unfamiliar path.

About the Author
A decade ago, Eleanor Garrell Berger was a hesitant adventurer who decided to try something new. Reluctant and wary, she gave rambling a try. She has been following footpaths ever since. Now, with more than 1,000 miles under her soles, walking both at home and abroad (mostly in Great Britain), this tenderfoot shares her passion and unique perspective with readers.
The author is an essayist whose personal commentaries have been published in anthologies and magazines, and broadcast on regional public radio stations. She lives with her walking companions—one human, one canine—in northern New York.
Review
“In Stepping Out, Eleanor Berger shows you how long-distance walking in the UK can be much more fun than hiking in Wilderness—especially if you're of an age where 'wrinklyness' or even 'crumblyness' has set in.
“Happily, Stepping Out highlights this unique national heritage and brings walking to life for those who are past hiking 'the hard way' or may never have considered hiking at all.
“Read this book and be inspired.”
