Summary

The Workings of the Subtle Heart is a literary work of narrative non-fiction; funny and intimate, of sudden beauty and power. Based upon an awakening into God, the book evokes the spiritual life, and calls the reader to insight of the "subtle heart," and to how the subtle heart perceives Reality beneath the apparent reality of the world. In The Workings of the Subtle Heart, William Widmer reveals how this capacity is used in science and in love, in poetry and religion, as the fulminating core of discernment.

About the Author

William Widmer is a painter, poet, husband, father, corporate middle-manager, and gardener, and is the leader of a Western Sufi Group. Widmer's dedication to the truth began at the age of seventeen, when he had "an enlightenment experience" that dissolved his old identity and sent him skittering down a somewhat different path. The decades that followed were devoted to understanding and integrating the experience, and its aftermath.

Reviews

Only one other book has been dedicated to me, a novel by James Brady. In my blurb I said it was "The Greatest Book Ever Written," which leaves me in the position of having to say of SUBTLE HEART that it is "Only The Second Greatest Book Ever Written." Sadly, that is the best I can do. It is indeed a pleasure to read, and spiritually therapeutic.
- Kurt Vonnegut

This book is full of inspiration on the spiritual path... and will be appreciated and loved by travelers on their spiritual path.
- Paramahamsa Prajnanananda, Kriya Yoga Institute, India

The author has chosen an important topic for our times: Christian spiritual experience. We seem to have lost some of that over the past few centuries, which helps explain Western society's current avid interest in Hindu and Buddhist and Sufi practice. THE WORKINGS OF THE SUBTLE HEART could help refocus us on our own Christian tradition of solitude, silence and deep prayer.
- Paula Huston, Author, THE HOLY WAY

THE WORKINGS OF THE SUBTLE HEART is a creative journey into the human experience of God. Many write about the search for God, but SUBTLE HEART explores a beautifully-described, youthful experience of God, and the way that the author has worked to renew and deepen that experience throughout his life. You do not have to share the author's theology to be moved by the richness of his journey and it potential lessons for yours.
- Kenneth Wagner, DPA President, Unitarian Universalist Association
