Excerpt

Yogi Berra, the Hall of Famer who played for the New York Yankees, was once having trouble with his swing. His inexperienced batting coach advised him to analyze what he was doing wrong while he was at the plate. Berra’s reply? “How can I hit and think at the same time?” Berra was a great hitter. He knew well what I would learn in my years in the theater. Any thinking when you’re on your feet in performance is a no-no. Whether you’re catching for the Yankees, singing and dancing in musical comedy, or dealing with a gaggle of reporters at a press conference, these rules apply:

  • know your game plan;
  • stay in the now;
  • give up the need for predetermined results;
  • interact with your audience;
  • be thought-less.
