Summary
Pequot Plantation tells the exciting story of southeastern Connecticut in early colonial days. The adventures of many early settlers are followed as they journeyed from England to Massachusetts and then to Pequot Plantation where they shaped the destiny of the new
settlement. These families made an incredible effort to establish homesteads and create successful communities. At the same time, Indian fortunes declined in spite of the support they gave to the new plantation and the valiant effort they exerted to maintain their place in a changing world. This is their story as well.
The multiple challenges of emergent infrastructure, political systems and maritime endeavors were undertaken with energy and enthusiasm. Not unexpectedly, disagreements were frequent and contentious debate often generated surprising results. In the crucible of King Philip’s War, all united to safeguard the colony. Connecticut’s Indian and colonial troops played a more important role in this war than has been previously portrayed. Similarly, southeastern Connecticut had significant interaction with events far beyond its borders. Today, the imprint of seventeenth century life is still very evident to area residents who are keenly aware of their heritage.
