“SWORDS INTO PLOWSHARES” IS A PHRASE often used to describe trench art. Using spent artillery shells and other battlefield debris or pieces of military equipment, amateur artists created an amazing variety of souvenirs or “mementoes” of their war service.
Although soldiers throughout history have created war souvenirs, the term trench art originated in France during the early years of World War I, and the “Great War” or the “War to End All Wars” produced trench art on a scale never seen before or since.
Largely neglected beyond a circle of devoted collectors until recently, trench art is experiencing a revival of interest by museums and collectors on both sides of the Atlantic.
Kimball’s research focuses on trench art from the Great War. She places individual pieces within their historical context with extensive quotations from contemporary sources. Illustrations of individual objects allow museum curators and collectors to identify similar pieces in their own collections.
In her long-awaited book on trench art and
related war souvenirs, Jane A. Kimball places the
diverse body of objects known as trench art
within their social and art historical contexts.
Ms. Kimball has a B.A. in Philosophy from Scripps College, an M.S.L.S. from the University of Southern California and a M.A. in History from the University of California, Irvine. She was an academic research librarian at the University of California for most of her career and also spent a year as Local History Librarian in Northampton Central Library in England.
In 1985 she received a Fulbright Fellowship at University College, Cardiff in Wales. She has been a collector of trench art for many years and has a collection of more than a thousand pieces.
