...Like my father before me, I have sought the perfection of one moment in my subject’s life. Maurice LaClaire is a recognized pioneer in color portraiture both for his technical creativity and for his artistic integrity. Color portraiture has been my life’s passion as well. Since most people reading this book have cameras and take their own pictures, I already share our readers’ joy of photography. Despite the fact that the language of vision is not easily converted to the written word, my hope is that this book will help readers better understand–and I hope appreciate–the craft of portraiture.

David joined his father in 1950 and began developing the craft skills that made his father famous. They worked closely for many years until his father's death in 1970. Both in teaching and in their portrait practice, they shared an uncommon interest in quality. Confronted by the force of cheaper color portraits that compromised their standards, David LaClaire chose to develop sources to continue the practices his father had started. David's purpose has always been to concentrate on ways to interpret his subjects to communicate more significantly than a simple documentary while still retaining the aesthetic quality of historically fine portraiture. He has found the greatest support from institutions where people are more significant than bricks and mortar. This includes families as well as corporations, universities, hospitals, churches, courts, and businesses- small and large. He has served with many community organizations and presided over state and community boards.
