Introduction
Geologist tell us that diamonds are made
from lumps of coal under great pressure and heat deep in the bosom
of the earth.
Personal observation has led me to the
conviction that most people who contribute much to their world are
tested under great pressures.
Many exemplary people I know or have
read about go through the fires of tests and obstacles they have to
overcome. They not only survive but they also bless, lift and
encourage others whose lives they touch. I know of few
exceptions. Some live to be old, while others die young.
These seemingly "extraordinary" people not only overcome obstacles
and reverses; they also inspire faith in other people to
believe they too can win–some having severe difficulties to
overcome.
Many face some form of "deficit" early
in life. Nevertheless they do not allow handicaps to speak the
final word! They learn to deal with deficits. From
somewhere deep inside them they embrace an optimism that, I believe,
the great Creator puts in each of us! They fan that spark of
inner faith that becomes for them an asset of an outward, objective
reality. They could make excuses/alibis like most people do,
but instead they choose the path of obedience to and trusting in the
God of grace and love.
Take a look at a few sparkling diamonds
I have found along the path! These plain, ordinary people
effectively used their power of choice.
Confronted by the pressures of poverty, the devastation of divorce,
or deluged by diseases like Alzheimer's or cancer, they cling to
hope. Many who start with severe limitations in
talents/abilities or later are surprised by accidents,
social/financial reverses untimely death in the family, or...? But
these profound optimists never give in, give up, or quit. They
deliberately choose to believe they can "overcome." I call
them "In spite of" people.
May their examples inspire you to believe that you too, can be a
winner in life's race, in spite of...!
