Summary
Millions of Americans are robbed of dignity as they enter nursing homes in their final years. (Note: When I speak of nursing homes I am not speaking of residential care facilities, which are very different.) These are always impersonal and institutional, generally poorly funded, and chronically short of staff.
I personally have watched in horror as dignified older Americans succumb to the silent causes of nursing home placements. Worse, most of these placements are unnecessary!

Many years ago, as a young social worker, I spent a full year working in nursing homes. I was sure I could find a way to improve these facilities. Later, as a gerontologist, I discovered that the very nature of these institutional settings preclude them from ever being places to live in dignity.
