Summary

The book, Mission Vets, chronicles the journey of Christian Veterinary Mission (CVM) from its inception through the first 25 years. It deals with the vision and subsequent "call" on the lives of many veterinarians to serve in this ministry. Veterinarians, traditionally, have not been involved in mission work like their human medical counterparts. After reading their story you will wonder why not, as they seem to be uniquely qualified.

God's love is expressed in our world in a myriad of ways. Mission Vets describes how a new expression of God's love was born in Sweden in 1975 during a meeting of the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) representing 84 countries. The story begins with Leroy Dorminy, a veterinarian from Georgia, when God stirred a new dream in his heart. It continues, as others catch the vision. The book uses quotes quite liberally from those who have participated in the ministry.

Much of the work takes place under the most difficult circumstances. The countries are put through a grid and those with the worst quality of life are selected for service. In such an environment, animals play a very important role in the lives of the people. For families who live on the edge, animals can often spell the difference between life and death. Healthy animals can also improve the quality of life for the family. They can enable children to go to school when they wouldn't have had an opportunity otherwise.

It is an exciting account of how God is using the profession of veterinary medicine to meet the needs of God's children in practical and unusual ways. But the reader must be aware that it also serves as a challenge to her or him. All of us have talents and skills that can be used to help those in need. Veterinary medicine affords a special avenue to accommodate this. This book tells how some veterinarians have used theirs.
