Summary
Citlali is an Aztec Indian woman who epitomizes the role of the nurturer, as she experiences life as a wife, a mother, a mother-in-law, and most poignantly, a grandmother. She whole-heartedly feels that the arrival of her grandson is the answer to her prayers. The religiously devout Citlali prizes her relationship with her grandson above all else; and her grandson, El Reyecito, a mestizo who becomes a Catholic priest, returns the affection. The wonderful world of Aztec and Mexican traditions come together in the picturesque countryside of Central Mexico at the beginning of the twentieth century. A reciprocal dependence exists between the people of this region and the land from which they live; one cannot thrive without the other. The cultivation of the land, the care of the animals, and an unwavering faith in God and the Virgin Mary allow the Indians to endure their multiple hardships and to continue their long-established way of life, which includes authentic Mexican cuisine and lively celebrations. Throughout the story, the imagery is brought to life through splashes of vivid Spanish-and Nahuatl-language, excerpts from traditional Mexican celebratory songs, and colorful illustrations.
Citlali es una indita azteca que personifica la fuente de la vida en su manifestación como esposa, madre, suegra y en su expresión mas tierna, como abuelita. Su corazón le dice que la llegada de su nieto es la respuesta a sus plegarias. Citlali, con su gran fervor religioso, valora su relación con su nietecito por sobre todas las cosas; y el niño, El Reyecito, un nene mestizo que crecerá para convertirse en sacerdote, le corresponde en su amor. El maravilloso mundo de las tradiciones aztecas y mexicanas convergen en los pintorescos campos del centro de México de principios del siglo veinte, en donde existe una dependencia reciproca entre la gente de esta región y la tierra en que viven; una no puede prosperar sin la otra. El cultivo de la tierra, la cría de los animals y una inquebrantable fe en Dios y la Vigen Maria les ayuda a los indigenas a sobrevivir tiempos difíciles. Y con fe siguen su ancestral froma de vivir, sus lindas tradiciones y la deliciosa comida mexicana. A lo largo de esta historia las imagenes cobran vida con palabras nahuatl y hermosos versos de tradicionales canciones de fiestas mexicanas y coloridas ilustraciones.
About the Author
Victoria Lopez was born in Mexico where she developed a passion for literature and a special interest in philosophy, psychology and poetry. Of Aztec ancestry, Victoria lived with her indigenous neighbors Aztecs for sixteen years, so she could learn their way of life and customs. She enjoyed contemplating their colorful costumes and hearing their conversations in Nahuatl. After emigrating to the United States, Victoria taught her two sons faith, hard work and love, both of which became highly successful adults. Victoria has a degree in Natural Sciences. While living in Los Angeles, the memories of her native Aztec roots remained alive in her mind. When she saw the tender love of being a Grandma, she wrote the short story "The Little King. " Now in her senior years, she writes, reads copiously, enjoys classical music and being the loving grandmother of five grandchildren.

Victoria López nació en México donde desarrolló una pasión por la literatura y un interés especial en la filosofía, la psicología y la poesía. De ascendencia azteca, Victoria convivió con sus vecinos indígenas aztecas hasta los dieciséis años, por cuanto pudo conocer su forma de vida y sus costumbres. Ella disfrutaba contemplar sus ropajes coloridos y escuchar sus conversaciones en Náhuatl. Tras emigrar a los Estados Unidos, Victoria educó a sus dos hijos con fe, trabajo duro y amor, por lo cual se convirtieron en adultos sumamente exitosos. Victoria posee un diploma en Ciencias Naturales. Mientras vivía en Los Ángeles, las memorias de sus raíces nativas Aztecas permanecieron vivas en su mente. Cuando ella experimentó el tierno amor de ser abuelita, escribió el cuento “El Reyecito”. Ahora en sus años mayores, ella escribe, lee copiosamente, disfruta de la música clásica y de ser la abuela de cinco amorosos nietos.
