Top 5 Power Publicity Tips
from TCI Smith Publicity—Power Publicity Tips Newsletter

1. Check out your competition: If you are looking for ideas on media outlets interested in your topic, search the Internet to find books and authors similar to yours. Then, go to the author's Web sites and find out what media coverage, interviews, etc., they've secured. Since your book is similar, you can then contact those media outlets to try and secure interviews or stories.

2. "How To" Press Releases. Whenever possible, develop a "how to" press release, no longer than 2 pages. These releases offer the absolute best shot of getting magazine or newspaper coverage because they provide clear, solid information. They are particularly useful for business and self-help books, but with creativity, you can also use them for novels. Editors love providing readers with new and useful information. Make it as easy as possible for them to cover you and your book!

3. No Attachments on E-mails. It can be tempting to showcase your eye-catching book cover to the media, but do NOT send them via e-mail. Wait until a photo of you or your book cover is requested before e-mailing. Nothing annoys a producer or editor more than dealing with virus scans for unsolicited attachments. This goes for the potentially annoying colored backgrounds as well.

4. Signature line. Speaking of e-mails, make it as easy as possible for people to remember you and your book by always, always, always including a professionally looking signature line with your name, book name, Web site address, telephone number, e-mail address (yes, again!).

5. Tailor your voicemail message. If you are inviting the media to call you, make sure your voicemail message is professional. If possible, say something like: You have reached John Doe, author of the new book The John Doe Experience. Please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible. You can also add: If you prefer, you are welcome to send me an e-mail at JohnDoe@aol.com. You want to make it as easy as possible for the media to reach you.

Book Expo Canada

The annual Book Expo Canada was held June 13th and 14th in Toronto, Canada. National Sales Manager Randy McKenzie attended the show. Quanta Distribution, AtlasBooks' Canadian distributor, had a booth that served as the headquarters for Randy and AtlasBooks.

Though exhibitor attendance was down from a year ago, traffic was heavy at the booth. Many buyers stopped by to review titles. Store managers from Canada's largest chain, Indigo/Chapters, were very excited about some of the new offerings. Publishers looking for distribution in the United States also stopped in for discussions.

There is consensus among Canadian publishers that the day of the independent bookseller is far from over, but to survive, independents must become anchored in the community and offer excellent customer service.

After the show, Randy followed up with Indigo/Chapters with a meeting at their main offices to present new fall titles.

American Association of University Presses (AAUP) Holds Annual Conference in Montreal, Canada

The 2008 AAUP Annual Meeting was held June 26th–28th in Montreal, Canada. Over 350 individuals as well as 40 industry vendors attended the conference this year with Deb Keets representing BookMasters/AtlasBooks.

The annual meeting consisted of many educational and informative sessions that would draw the interest of any individual with topics ranging from The Green Challenge to Making Things Better with XML.

In addition to the discussion sessions, the AAUP sponsored its annual book, jacket, and journal show featuring some of the latest ideas in book and journal production concepts and designs.

The attendees were also treated to the opening and closing receptions, which allowed vendors and attendees the opportunity to mingle and network. The AAUP also sponsored an Ad Auction, which raised over $14,700.00 to benefit the Sabre Foundation, which is an organization that sends books and other educational materials to foreign countries. (To learn more about the Sabre Foundation go to: http://www.sabre.org/about/Foundation_Overview.php.)
