AtlasBooks Acquires Biblio Distribution

National Book Network announced today that it has sold its small press distribution division, Biblio Distribution, to AtlasBooks, the distribution arm of BookMasters of Ashland, Ohio. Approximately 500 Biblio clients will become clients of Atlas Books under the same terms and conditions as their current Biblio contracts stipulate. The sale and assignment is similar to the process followed by Perseus when it added 150 PGW clients through the assumption of PGW agreements.

Marianne Bohr, Senior Vice President of NBN, said, “We launched Biblio in 2001 at the request of Ingram which was looking for efficient ways to purchase books from small presses. Since then, the distribution environment has changed in many ways, including the reentry of Ingram itself into the distribution end of the business.”

Dave Wurster, COO of AtlasBooks and BookMasters, said, “I am excited for Biblio publishers. We have the resources to focus our efforts on exceeding their sales goals, while offering additional services such as direct-to-consumer sales support and marketing opportunities. Working cooperatively with the NBN and Biblio staff is making this transition go quite smoothly. They are a fantastic group of people, who truly care about the future of the Biblio clients.”

The effective date of the sale is January 14. Publishers’ inventory will be transported from NBN’s distribution center in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania to AtlasBooks’s distribution center in Ashland, Ohio. Electronic title files have been transferred from Biblio to AtlasBooks in order to ensure a completely seamless transition. Biblio and Atlas are committed to a hand off which will be transparent to booksellers and wholesalers. A list of Biblio clients and their ISBN prefixes will be shared with retail and wholesale customers before the end of the month.

AtlasBooks was in the news several months ago when it assumed responsibility for the distribution of the majority of BookWorld clients after BookWorld went out of business.

Jed Lyons, President and CEO of NBN, stated, “Our decision to sell Biblio is the result of our desire to focus our time and resources on the sales representation and distribution of the larger NBN publishers, some of whom we have worked for more than 20 years. We know that Biblio publishers will be well cared for by AtlasBooks.”

Notes From the Front Lines - Beware of the January Publishing Cliff

From late spring to late summer all eyes are on the very important fall selling season. Sales conferences, Book Expo, the fall catalog all point to high expectations for great success for the entire list of brand new titles. Yet when the radiant colors of the season have passed, the winds of winter become evident. And if too much emphasis has been placed on the fall list, then the winter will be long, hard and cold indeed. As December turns to January, bookstores and wholesalers feverously begin to pack up overstock to be returned to sender. And if the list of new titles is spare come winter, then many a publisher will experience a significant cash flow squeeze. Therefore, it is important to spread your list of new publications over the whole year. January and February, for example, are strong months for finance and self help. It is important to plan from a financial as well as a marketing perspective.

Publicity differs from advertising. In advertising, you pay media outlets to run your message. You write the message you want the public to receive and you pay publications, stations, Web sites, and other outlets to deliver it. According to the old adage, “With advertising, you pay for it; with publicity, you pray for it.”

In publicity, your message is delivered through the media and through channels such as your networks and your contacts’ networks. In contrast to advertising, you don’t pay the media to deliver your message, but convince it to deliver it in its articles, reviews, and programs. The media may deliver the exact message you provide, or write or present information about your book in its own words, style, or format.

Publicity is effective because the public tends think of information it gets from the media as news. So, it gives publicity more credence than advertising does, which the public knows is bought and paid for by advertisers. Advertising is perceived as being big on hype and short on truth, while information provided by the media is generally accepted as true.
