Many people have a vision of what it is to be a fireman. Without the actual experience, they can only be partially correct. This is the inside story of a fireman's life, through the first-person account of a 31-year veteran of the Fire Department New York. The author takes us from his early days when "I had no idea of the adventures I would encounter," through his career, and to the awful days surrounding September 11, 2001. The admiration for his comrades is shown through his stories. You are with him through the terrible Macy's fire where a young fireman lost his life, as well as the collapse at the Brooklyn Waldbaum's store where 10 firemen are missing.
This book depicts an unusual and dangerous profession and is a tribute to the dedication and courage of all firefighters. George Kreuscher is a 31-year veteran of the Fire Department New York - FDNY. He served 10 years in Engine COmpany 230 and Ladder Company 102, both in Bedford-Stuyvesant/Williamsburg, Brooklyn and 16 years in Manhattan's Rescue Company 1. From 1964 to 1995, he responded to 28,000 alarms. Statistically, that represents approximately 9,000 fires, 9,000 emergencies, and 9,000 false alarms. As an instructor at the Fire Academy, City of New York, he instructed probationary firefighters, taught auto extrication, and the use of rescue tools. He was part of the "Collapse of Buildings" program given to the Rescue Companies, which would eventually become the Rescue School of the FDNY. He was one of the original FDNY Divers.
