Rich King, author of
My Maggie
Rich King and his wife Maggie were two people who never gave up on each other -- a testament to a love few have the will to attain. In his new book, My Maggie, he shares one of powerful, complex, and memorable love stories ever written.
"Maggie was a woman who understood how to lead a happy life and led it, in spite of the challenges placed in front of her, Rich says. "My Maggie is great drama, great passion, and great fun. It is a book written with a love so immense it almost defies description".
Maggie was Rich's childhood sweetheart and wife of thirty-two years. Diagnosed with hearing loss at the age of four, she wore cumbersome hearing aids and felt the humiliation of being "different." Slowly, an insidious disease robbed her of her vision. She fought three different cancers, changed careers in the middle of her life, and fought to realize her dreams. Yet, underneath those great challenges, there was an incredible love shared by two people. They lived a classic old-fashioned love story.
After her death, Rich decided to share Maggie's story of struggle and determination. "It started out as 'I'm gonna write a book about a women who overcame all these problems, but then I started writing it and it became a love story." King said.
The writing process took Rick about a year. "The process was very cathartic," Rich explains, "but over time, the more I promote the book, the process has become self-destructive in a way. The book ends in tragedy, and I keep reliving it every time I talk about the book."
Emmy winning sportscaster for WGNTV, Rich was named Illinois sportscaster of the year in 1991. He has covered sports in Chicago for 31 years and has also appeared on the NBC Today show twice and The Bonnie Hunt Show to talk about My Maggie. The book has already sold 20,000 copies. Rich does volunteer work for the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind and the American Cancer society.
All proceeds from the sales of My Maggie are being donated to charity. To date, over $31,000 has been donated.
