In the Author Spotlight,
Angela Kilmartin,
the world's only pioneering researcher and
long-term campaigner for patients suffering
cystitis, Candida and mercury poisoning
Imagine spending your honeymoon almost comatose in bed, with a temperature of 105 degrees, incontinent and in constant pain. Now, try repeating that scenario every two weeks for over seven years. Angela Kilmartin has lived just that. Her struggle led to her crusade for people suffering not only from debilitating urinary tract infections, but also candida and mercury poisoning.
In 1966, Angela Kilmartin had the perfect life. A promising opera singer, she married Paul Kilmartin and the disabling attacks of cystitis which eventually ended her promising career began. After seven years of trauma and no hope she was introduced to one small self help tip. From then on, in a rage because the self help had partially worked where all medical interventions had not, she researched other ways to help herself. Eventually by 1976 she had completely overcome it with very simple measures of prevention.
"The reason we knew nothing was that nothing was written. At the time, there was no other book about cystitis," Angela explains. "The medical profession does not make people well, that only happens when prevention is taken. I have been the first author to talk about prevention and am still a leader in the field."
Alongside cystitis there was terrible Candida from all the antibiotics. "Not only was I struggling with cystitis, but after all the antibiotics, my immune system went down and I began to develop candida, another devastating response of the body," Angela explains. "My vagina was ravaged with thrush and it completely wrecked my sex life. I had to do something."
Angela continued her research and her writings moved to candida. "Through prevention and knowledge, I have overcome this. It's not just antibiotics that cause this condition. Diet is a small factor, drinking too much alcohol, eating too much cheese and other bad habits can exacerbate the condition," says Angela. "Diabetes is a huge factor. To much sugar in the body causes the candida to thrive. In fact, many people who die actually have candida listed on their death certificate. The amount of medication people are on shortly before death can cause an outbreak of thrush." Angela compiled all her writing into a complete bible on Candida. This also became renowned in the field and a best seller.
In 1986 Angela became seriously ill. No tests or hospital stays could diagnose the problem. In bed most days or on the sofa, she looked and felt dreadful. Life as she had known it came to halt and one afternoon she nearly stopped breathing. The turning point came at a lecture on candida. "I was attending a lecture on candida and the second part was about mercury fillings and toxicity. One of the symptoms mentioned was excessive drooling," says Angela. "I went to bed every night with tissues stuffed into the corners of my mouth." Angela was diagnosed with mercury poisoning. Mercury amalgams were removed in 1994 and life resumed without any of the forty or so symptoms which had brought her so low.
Again in anger, she has turned her own experiences into help for the majority of citizens who are knowingly or unknowingly afflicted to a greater or lesser degree. For five years Angela ran 'Patients Against Mercury Amalgams' (PAMA) aiming to inform, educate and encourage patients and dentists to reject poisonous mercury amalgams as filling materials choosing only white composite fillings. "Only use white fillings," she cautions. "Mercury fillings are slowly poisoning you and will always be a poison."
Angela continues her research and is will to talk to anyone. She has appeared on numerous radio and television programs and continues to lecture on candida, cystitis, and mercury poisoning.
