A Daughter Looks Back at a Soldier and the Great War

Eleanor Elliott Brownell grew up on a farm near Mason, Michigan. Her father, a World War I veteran, joined the United States Army to fight in France in 1918. His letters home and years of research have been combined in About Face - A Daughter Looks Back at a Soldier and the Great War.

One day after her father's passing, Eleanor was struck with the memory of some letters that he had sent back to his family while in France and when he was training in the States. "I had seen them and read them when I was a little girl. I asked my brother about these letters and was pleased to find out that he had them," she explains.

Eleanor borrowed the letters from her brother and began to read them. Her husband, an avid history buff, became very interested in them. "He was always asking me 'Tell me more about ...'", she says. "I realized that I did not know a lot about the war." She began to read all she could about World War I, starting with a book she found among her father's belongings about the history of the 4th Division in Texas, which he father was a part of. After reading more and more books, he husband finally persuaded her to write all of her knowledge down. Three years later, About Face was born.

About Face is both a history lesson and a personal journey. Her father's letters home are addedinto the larger context of the Great War. The author tells of her father's heroism under fire. "It tells what happened to my father when he went into Germany during the occupation as well as the events leading up to the Treaty of Versailles," Eleanor says.

Eleanor received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Michigan in 1959. She worked as a reporter for ten years, nine of which were at The Flint Journal in Flint, Michigan. She has three children. When not writing, she enjoys gardening and volunteer work.
