Dr. Michael L. Brown,
Author of
A Queer Thing Happened to America
A Queer Thing Happened to America chronicles the dramatic cultural changes that have taken place in our country in relation to homosexuality and pointedly asks the question: Are we heading in the right direction? Written in a lively and compelling style and at the same time backed with massive research, this forthright and yet compassionate study evaluates the extraordinary impact gay activism has had on our society, from elementary schools to college campuses, from the press to the courts, and from the world of business to the world of religion.
Moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2003, Dr. Brown was surprised to see how public and strident gay activism was in this “Bible belt” city. As he began to look more carefully at the issue from a national perspective, he began to see that “gay activism was really having a transforming effect on society and that it was really quite militant.” He explains, “As much as I have a deep love for the gay and lesbian community, I really felt compelled to write a book that would awaken the conscience of the nation and sound an alarm about the dangerous direction in which we were heading.”
Though Dr. Brown has published with major publishers before, no prominent secular or Christian publisher was willing to go near this new book, with the consensus being that the title needed to be changed and that the contents of the book were too controversial. When talking to the man on the street, however, Brown observes that, “Reaction to the title itself has actually been very positive. Gays and lesbians that I have talked to smiled and found nothing offensive about the title whatsoever. Christian leaders that I have talked with thought it was a tremendous title, yet the publishing world was scandalized by it and every major publisher we talked to said that the title would have to change.”
Dr. Brown continues, “The thing that’s interesting is that as far back as 2003, the Associated Press reported that ‘queer’ was now mainstream and even hipster, and it really has become quite common and popular in our culture. And so, the idea that the title was deemed too controversial is part of the problem – namely that people are afraid to say anything that might be considered offensive to the gay and lesbian community for fear of some kind of negative backlash. I found it fascinating that the call for tolerance and diversity only seems to go one way.”
A Queer Thing Happened to America chronicles the extraordinary journey of gay activism in our country, literally, from Stonewall Inn to the White House, also analyzing the foundational arguments of the gay civil rights movement and exposing the extreme intolerance of those calling for tolerance. The book also addresses the question: Is there really a gay agenda, or is it a figment of the imagination of the religious right?
While taking strong issue with the goals of gay activism, Dr. Brown does so with compassion, respect, and honor for the individuals that he differs with. “I let the readers hear both sides of the debate and decide for themselves,” he explains. The book includes a chapter titled “Big Brother Is Watching and He Really Is Gay,” which documents “how religious freedoms and religious liberties are now coming in second place to sexual freedoms and sexual liberties, and on a shocking scale at that.”
Taking 6 years to write the book, Dr. Brown felt that it was really important to do meticulous research and to understand the heart of those he was differing with. “I immersed myself in reading the stories of those in the gay and lesbian community so I could feel their pain, their rejection, their social struggles, so I could get into their shoes and be sympathetic to their issues and reexamine the validity of my positions,” he says. “There’s massive research behind the book even though it is written in a way that anyone can understand.”
Dr. Brown is the founder and president of FIRE School of Ministry in Concord, North Carolina, director of the Coalition of Conscience, and host of the daily, nationally, syndicated talk radio show, “The Line of Fire,” as well as the host of the Jewish-outreach, documentary TV series, “Think It Thru,”. He has preached throughout America and around the world, bringing a message of spiritual, moral, and cultural revolution. For the last six years, he has been in extensive interaction with the gay and lesbian community, seeking to reach out to the people with compassion while at the same time standing against the goals of gay activism. For this he has been branded a Hitler and jihadist, while others have called him a religious conservative with a heart.
