According to the National Kidney Foundation, one in nine Americans has chronic kidney disease. Cindy Barclay, author of That Damn Dialysis! knows all too well the horrors of this disease. A critical care nurse for over 20 years, she specializes in treating patients requiring acute and chronic dialysis.
"End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is a poor man's disease." Cindy explains. Her goals for writing That Damn Dialysis were simple; to bring about awareness and to provide engaging and realistic information relating to chronic kidney disease. "We as medical people tend to write things for medical people. I wanted to write a book, in layman's terms, for people suffering from this forgotten disease," she says. "I want people to understand the disease process and understand what is happening to them."
In the book, Cledus B. Washington’s experiences as a new dialysis patient, and his interaction with medical personnel, family, friends, and matters of the heart. It provides a poignant tale that everyone will enjoy as they learn the facts about chronic kidney disease. "Fifty percent of renal disease is hereditary. I want to educate people and increase public awareness of this disease."
A single mom, Cindy has 2 daughters, Gennevive and Maria. As the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Quality Dialysis, Cindy has seen the company blossom into “your #1 staff-assisted home dialysis company” in the State of Texas. The “Diva of Dialysis” has become one of Houston’s most respected and successful women in business, but after more than thirteen successful years in business, Cindy believes that her company’s success revolves around the fact that she sees herself not just a business woman, but as a patient advocate, who believes that the need to be cared for with dignity and respect should never be taken lightly.
Cindy is working on her second book, which continues the story of Cledus's battle with kidney disease. It will follow him through his kidney transplant and beyond. "Over 300 people die each day without donating their organs," she says. "I hope to change that number with this book." Cindy plans on having this volume completed by early next year.
