Atlantis: Inspiration for the Future

Walter F. Laredo was born in Bolivia. As a young child, his relatives called him "Little da Vinci", because of his skills—mainly for drawing pictures or by modeling with clay.

"Once upon a time when I was a teenager, and when I was in vacation from school, I accompanied my father, who loved sports and hiking, in a hiking exploration trip through an uncharted territory of a non populated region of Bolivia.  Sometimes hiking on cold mountains of sharp peaks, while other times by hot wet jungles," he says. It was this trip that later inspired him to write the first part of this book. "Once back to civilization I decided to write a book in order to point out the beauty of that wilderness I saw. "

After high school, he attended La Plata University in Argentina to study aeronautical engineering and at the same time got a job at the National Commission of Atomic Energy as a mechanical designer for components for an experimental nuclear reactor. He then traveled to the United States to finish his education.

After graduating as a mechanical engineer at UCLA in 1973, he worked in USA, at the Principal Aerospace Companies where he designed aircraft and rockets. He also worked as aircraft structural engineer at McDonnell Douglas and Rockwell. He then worked as an aircraft preliminary design engineer in product development with the advanced projects department of the Boeing Company. He was later employed as a consultant and contract engineer at Grumman and General Dynamics.
